SC Freiburg will be without Austrian international Philipp Lienhart for the next few weeks. The central defender is out due to an abdominal muscle injury, explained SC coach Julian Schuster. Lienhart will therefore also be missing for the first half of the Bundesliga season on Wednesday (20:30/DAZN) at RB Leipzig.
The 29-year-old already had to sit out the two games before the winter break due to muscular problems in his groin. He returned to the defense in the 2-1 win against Hamburger SV on Saturday, but was substituted at half-time with a hamstring problem. Anthony Jung is likely to replace him again in Leipzig.
Schuster sees advantage in Leipzig's failure to play
Freiburg want to end a long negative streak against RB: In nine Bundesliga and one second division game so far, the Breisgauers have yet to win away at the Saxons. However, Schuster expects RB youngster Yan Diomande to be back in the starting eleven for the hosts following his quarter-final exit with the Ivory Coast at the Africa Cup. Leipzig brought the winger back from Morocco on a private jet.
Schuster sees a small advantage in the fact that his team has already played a game after the winter break, while the RB game at FC St. Pauli was canceled due to ice and snow. However, Freiburg's coach also pointed out that Leipzig do not have a triple burden this season and can therefore go into the game well rested. Last season, the hosts failed to qualify for an international competition.
