The SC DHfK Leipzig handball team have missed out on an escape in the Bundesliga relegation battle. The team of coach Frank Carstens had to settle for a 26:26 (17:16) win in the basement duel at HSG Wetzlar on Friday evening after leading for a long time.
In front of 4,330 spectators, national player Franz Semper was the best scorer for SC DHfK, which now has 8:34 points. Wetzlar, coached by former Leipzig player Runar Sigtryggsson, remain bottom of the table with 8:36 points.
The cellar duel began without any feeling out. Both teams immediately sought their salvation in offense. Leipzig impressed with its quick transition play and led 9:7 after ten minutes. The game then became much more hectic. The home side had to accept a red card for its top scorer Philipp Ahouansou in the 20th minute, but managed to hold on until the break.
After the break, Leipzig pulled 22:19 ahead in the 43rd minute. As a result, the visitors hardly managed anything in offense, but the outstanding goalkeeper Domenico Ebner (16 saves) prevented Wetzlar from taking the lead. Leipzig still had a chance to win with its final attack, but William Bogojevic's shot got caught in the block.
