The SC DHfK Leipzig handball team missed out on its first win of the season in the German league at the fourth attempt. Coach Raul Alonso's team squandered a five-goal lead in the closing stages and had to settle for a 24:24 (13:12) victory in the end. Tim Hertzfeld was SC DHfK's best scorer with five goals. Goalkeeper Domenico Ebner shone with 15 saves.
The Leipzig club dominated the opening spell. They repeatedly outplayed Göppingen's attacking defense with good ball movement, from which pivot Hertzfeld in particular benefited. Ebner repeatedly stood out at the other end, with the result that the visitors led 10:5 after 18 minutes. However, the thread then snapped. Technical mistakes and poorly prepared shots allowed Frisch Auf to produce a 6:0 run to make it 11:10 in the 28th minute.
In the disjointed second half, Leipzig pulled 23:18 ahead in the 54th minute, also because Ebner continued to drive Göppingen to despair with his saves. However, Leipzig's nerves frayed in the final spell. The home side fought back and equalized with four seconds remaining.
