RB Leipzig's managing director Marcel Schäfer does not believe that his long-standing club VfL Wolfsburg will be relegated. "I am convinced that they will stay in the league," the 41-year-old told the "Wolfsburger Allgemeine Zeitung" ahead of this Sunday's reunion in the Bundesliga (17:30/DAZN).
Schäfer spent a total of 17 years as a player, sports director and most recently managing director of VfL before moving to Leipzig in the same role in 2024. His family still lives in Wolfsburg. His connection to VfL is so strong that he continues to "keep his fingers crossed for the team on 32 match days".
There is also constant speculation in Wolfsburg about a return of the 2009 champions. His successor Peter Christiansen has been criticized for the sporting development of the 15th-placed team. Schäfer does not rule this out in principle, but always refers in this context to his contract in Leipzig, which runs until 2028.
