Now things are getting really uncomfortable for 1. FC Magdeburg. After the 1:3 defeat against Karlsruher SC, the third loss in a row, Petrik Sander's team is in a relegation spot. Dariusz Stalmach (66) scored his first FCM goal. Karlsruhe's Louey Ben Ferhat (20th, 53rd) and Marvin Wanitzek (87th) scored for KSC.
"We make it far too easy for opponents to score goals against us. Every opponent says you play such great soccer, but ass licking doesn't get us anywhere," said Philipp Hercher after the game. "I don't care how we play, we have to win games. That's the most important thing, everyone wants to stay in the league," agreed goalscorer Stalmach.
Once again, a Magdeburg mistake leads to a goal against
Coach Petrik Sander made changes to the regulars at 1. FC Magdeburg: Marcus Mathisen was left on the bench and Silas Gnaka started instead. Richmond Tachie replaced Gladbach loanee Noah Pesch at right-back. Tachie also had the first opportunity of the match, heading a ball at the far post onto the outside of the net (1st). A fast-paced game then developed, with KSC often getting into pressing situations and putting the hosts under pressure.
The FCM often tried from distance, but the balls were usually too central. Ben Farhat took advantage of an unnecessary misplaced pass from Jean Hugonet to give the visitors the lead (20'). Coach Sander made adjustments at the break, bringing on Mathisen and Dariusz Stalmach for Hugonet and Gnaka. This had no effect on the pitch: FCM did not defend consistently in their own penalty area and the visitors increased their lead through Ben Farhat.
FCM woke up too late
The Elbe club repeatedly failed to gain a foothold in tackles and the Blue & Whites lost possession that had already been secured. As a result, it felt like the visitors were always closer to scoring than FCM were to the break. Nevertheless, Stalmach scored when he took advantage of a rare moment of disarray in the KSC defense. After that, FCM took control of the game but were unable to equalize despite numerous opportunities. Instead, Wanitzek decided the game.
"We need to fight with bite and score goals. The last part of the first half of the season is encouraging, we were unbeaten and had a few clean sheets. Now we have to flip the switch as quickly as possible, otherwise things will get uncomfortable. But a change in the coaching position is not necessary, we have also shown with the duo that we can get points," said captain Dominik Reimann on Sky.
