Long jumper Malaika Mihambo has continued her winning streak at the German Athletics Championships. The Olympic champion and two-time outdoor world champion, who was injured for a long time last year, won on Sunday in Leipzig with 6.93 meters and won her seventh national indoor title in a row. Mihambo, who returned this winter after a torn muscle fibre, was able to impress for the first time since her comeback.
Mikaelle Assani finished a close second. With 6.91 meters, she surpassed both the Olympic standard and the standard for the World Indoor Championships from March 1-3 in Glasgow. The previous German best of the year, Laura Raquel Müller, landed in third place with 6.48 meters. Last year's ninth-placed athlete at the World Championships, Maryse Luzolo, had withdrawn at short notice with Achilles tendon problems.
Only the American Tara Davis-Woodhall, who jumped 7.18 meters at the US Championships at the weekend, has jumped further than Mihambo this indoor season. Assani made a strong start in her first attempt with a personal indoor best of 6.81 meters, Mihambo beat this mark by two centimeters in her second attempt and improved to 6.93 meters in her third attempt. Assani was then only two centimeters short of this mark. 60-meter champion Rebekka Haase was also unbeatable over 200 meters, the European relay champion secured her sixth title on this distance in 23.15 seconds.
