Leaders SC Magdeburg narrowly avoided their first defeat of the season in the German Handball League. The team from the Elbe city won 32:31 (17:16) at VfL Gummersbach. Magdeburg's top scorer was Omar Ingi Magnusson with eleven goals.
The SCM missed a number of shots in the opening minutes, but then turned the game in its favor for the first time with three goals in forty seconds (3:1/6). Inaccuracies became more frequent overall. Gummersbach equalized, but Magdeburg pulled two goals ahead again. Gummersbach also had an answer to that and so the league leaders went into the break just one goal ahead.
Magnusson takes control of the game
After the break, Magnusson scored four times in succession for SCM and Magdeburg led by three goals again (21:18/34). Both teams then failed to score at all for five minutes, scoring with the crossbar, missing shots or making technical mistakes. Magdeburg held on to its lead, but had major problems with the home side's backcourt, with the result that Gummersbach eventually turned the game around (25:27/52).
The club from the city on the Elbe countered and took the lead again, but was not able to get a grip on Kentin Mahé, who equalized time and again. Matthias Musche made it 32:31 with seven seconds remaining, Gummersbach immediately called its final timeout, but Sergey Hernandez saved the last shot.
