It should also help Berlin's Olympic bid. Leipzig gets an Ironman race. 1.9 kilometers of swimming, 90 kilometers of cycling, 21.1 kilometers of running.

The worldwide Ironman race series will be stopping off in Leipzig for the first time next year. In the Saxon trade fair city, triathletes will be able to compete over half the Ironman distance: 1.9 kilometers of swimming, 90 kilometers of cycling and 21.1 kilometers of running.

In 2022, there was an Ironman70.3 in the state capital of Dresden. However, after some problems, the collaboration was not continued.

The race in the home city of former 70.3 world champion Rico Bogen, former 70.3 European champion Caroline Pohle and two-time Paralympics winner Martin Schulz is scheduled for 23 August.

Finish in the heart of the city

"For Leipzig, the Ironman 70.3 is also a further building block on the way to a concept for the Olympic and Paralympic Games together with Berlin," said Heiko Rosenthal, Mayor of Sport, in a statement. Swimming will take place in Lake Cospuden and cycling in Leipzig's Neuseenland. The finish line will be in the city center.

"We have long had our eye on the vibrant city of Leipzig - a dynamic, future-oriented destination with a strong sports culture," said Ironman Managing Director (Europe, Middle East and Africa) Thomas Veje Olsen,.

There will therefore be four Ironman races over this distance in Germany next year: In addition to Leipzig, Kraichgau on May 31, Duisburg on August 16 and Erkner near Berlin on September 13 will once again be included. There will be races over the double and therefore full distance in Hamburg on June 7 and Frankfurt on June 28.
