The FC Bayern Munich basketball team have won their first competitive game under their new head coach and former national team coach Gordon Herbert. The defending champions beat Niners Chemnitz 73:59 (36:28) at home in the opening game of the German Basketball League (BBL).
Herbert's successor as national team coach, the Spaniard Álex Mumbrú, saw a good defensive performance from Bayern as a spectator. As a result, Chemnitz conceded more turnovers than field goals at the end of the first quarter. However, the visitors closed an 8:15 deficit to 16:16 at the end of the quarter.
Chemnitz also found it difficult to score from the floor in the second half and had only scored once from the field midway through the quarter. At the other end, Devin Booker and international Oscar da Silva made the most of their size advantage - the duo led Munich to a 36:28 halftime lead with a combined 20 points.
