Golden point goal difference: SCM sees itself at eye level

When Magdeburg meets Berlin, a lot of goals are likely. That could help decide the title.

Ahead of the top match in the German Handball League between league leaders SC Magdeburg and champions Füchse Berlin, SCM head coach Bennet Wiegert is also keeping an eye on goal difference. In the event of a tie, this would ultimately decide who wins the title. "That could actually be a golden point in the end. That's why it's important. The fact that Berlin are now five goals ahead is still all within reason in my view," said the coach of the Champions League winners in a media conference ahead of the game on Saturday (16:05/ARD and Dyn).

"Now the goal difference is still somewhat pari passu. It's particularly important on Saturday, because every goal counts double. The goals you score are automatically on the negative side for your opponent. You have to be aware of this responsibility and not talk yourself out of it," emphasized Magdeburg's successful coach. However, SCM currently still has a six-point lead over Berlin.

Wiegert: League must decide which is more attractive

Wiegert left open how he would decide on the model in a vote. In other words, between retaining the current rule, according to which goal difference counts in the event of a tie, or a return to the principle of using the direct duel, which is already practiced in the Bundesliga. "As always, both models have advantages and disadvantages. The league has to decide which is the more attractive option for them. Should I be asked, I would have to think about it a bit and then decide from the perspective of the interests of SC Magdeburg, where I am the appointed managing director and head coach," said Wiegert.

In the top match with the Foxes, Wiegert expects a lot of goals, as both teams play fast-paced handball. "The tempo will certainly be the key. Not only to push our own tempo, but also to keep the opponent's tempo in check. That's a big point in the preparation," said Wiegert.
