Nils Dunkel and Timo Eder came away empty-handed in the all-around final of the European Gymnastics Championships in Leipzig. The 28-year-old Dunkel was on course for a medal for four apparatus, but lost ground towards the end and finished a strong fifth with 80.932 points. Mixed European champion Eder improved over the course of the competition and finished 13th with 79.231 points after a weak start.
The new European champion was Adem Asil from Turkey with 82.398 points. Second place went to Frenchman Leo Saladino (81.430) ahead of Krisztofer Meszaros from Hungary (81.164).
One day after winning the title for the first time in the mixed final together with Karina Schönmaier (Chemnitz), 19-year-old Eder only started with 13.066 points on the pommel horse. Dunkel, on the other hand, performed strongly afterwards. The 2022 European Championship bronze medallist scored 14.100 points on his special apparatus and was in third place after the first round. After scoring 13.500 points on the rings, the man from Halle even went into the third round as the overall leader. Eder, on the other hand, dropped back to 23rd place overall with 12.200 points.
Dunkel loses ground, Eder catches up
With 13.266 points, Dunkel remained in the top three, while Eder from Ludwigsburg started a race to catch up with 13.433 points and continued this with 13.900 points on parallel bars for 15th place. Dunkel was congratulated for 13.733 points by his coach Hubert Brylok and was still within reach of the medals.
Timo Eder and his home coach Thomas Andergassen were then delighted with 13.166 points. Dunkel, on the other hand, had to take a step back before the final floor exercise with 12.733 points. The youngster received 13.466 points for his final routine, while Dunkel left the podium with 13.600 points.
