Professional and popular sports mix at the German Gymnastics Festival in Leipzig. On the first day, the competitions are already well attended - and the offers for sports fans are crowded.

The German Gymnastics Festival in Leipzig is already a magnet for visitors on the first day. "It's loud and full, the events are super well attended, which exceeds all our expectations," said a spokeswoman. The trade fair, the main venue for the sporting event, was packed.

There were queues for fitness checks and equipment. Many people were dressed in sportswear, practising flickflack and doing gymnastics - as well as on stages and squares in the city centre.

Leipzig hosts the spectacle for the 13th time

The four-day gymnastics festival opened on Wednesday evening, with 21,000 visitors according to the organizers. Competitions, demonstrations and shows are planned until Sunday, including ten German championships in gymnastics and sports acrobatics, for example, as well as trampolining.

Around 50,000 athletes and hundreds of thousands of guests are expected to attend numerous events. At the same time, the European Gymnastics Championships will take place on the grounds of the New Trade Fair Centre.

According to the organizers, the International German Gymnastics Festival is one of the largest mass sports events in the world. Leipzig hosted the event back in 1863 and is now staging the four-yearly spectacle for the 13th time.
