Almost two years after his last appearance in the Bundesliga, former international Timo Werner has celebrated his comeback in Germany's top flight. The 29-year-old striker was substituted for goalscorer Johan Bakayoko in stoppage time in RB Leipzig's 1:0 (1:0) win at VfL Wolfsburg.
Werner was most recently loaned out to Europa League winners Tottenham Hotspur for a year and a half. The attacker was unable to establish himself in the English Premier League and was actually supposed to be sold to Leipzig before this season. Despite this sporting downfall, the RB fans celebrated him with chants after he came on as a substitute in Wolfsburg.
Schäfer: "Very deserving player"
"He is a very deserving player. He has an incredible rate - and the fans reward that," said Leipzig's sporting director Marcel Schäfer.
In a total of 214 competitive games for RB, Werner has scored 113 goals so far. His previous Bundesliga appearance came in a 2-0 defeat at Mainz on November 4, 2023. Before his move to Tottenham, he then played once more in the Champions League against Young Boys Bern (2-1) on December 13, 2023.
