Ricky Bornschein will miss Erzgebirge Aue for the time being. The reason is a cancer diagnosis.

Third division soccer club FC Erzgebirge Aue will have to do without attacking player Ricky Bornschein for longer. The striker successfully underwent an operation after being diagnosed with a tumor, the club announced. It is not known what type of cancer it is.

The club has always been very sensitive to the issue of cancer and attaches great importance to prevention. Bornschein had to undergo a medical examination due to acute symptoms. "His fight began immediately and we are giving him all the support we can," said sporting director Matthias Heidrich.

"Of course, news like this is extremely difficult for the mind at first. But thanks to my family and many friends, I'm sure I'll be able to cure the illness completely. Patience, mental strength and positive energy are now required and are my firm intention," said the 25-year-old.

Bornschein is not the first Auer player to be diagnosed with cancer. At the end of 2021, striker Omar Sijaric made his testicular cancer public. After successful treatment, he is back playing for FC Erzgebirge and his contract expires at the end of the season.
