With the "rural dentist quota", Saxony wants to attract young doctors to work in rural regions. It is possible for them to study dentistry outside of the numerus clausus.

Until April 15, prospective students can still apply to study dentistry as part of Saxony's "state dentist quota". Eight study places are available for the winter semester 2026/2027, the Ministry of Health announced. Leipzig and Dresden are being considered as study locations.

Eight study places will be awarded without a numerus clausus

"With the rural dentist quota, we are creating the opportunity to study dentistry in Saxony outside of the numerus clausus for the first time and at the same time specifically strengthening healthcare, especially in rural areas," explained Health Minister Petra Köpping (SPD).

"We are thus opening up reliable prospects for committed young people - combined with the opportunity to work where they are really needed. I encourage those interested to take advantage of this opportunity and apply," emphasized the Minister.

Graduates must work in Saxony for at least ten years

After completing their studies, participants must commit to completing their preparation period in Saxony or immediately begin further training as a specialist dentist for orthodontics in Saxony. They would then have to work as a dentist or orthodontist in Saxony for at least ten years.

Following this, they must work for at least 10 years as a contract dentist in the dental or orthodontic field in an underserved area or an area at risk of undersupply in the Free State of Saxony.

Two-stage application procedure

A two-stage application procedure applies to interested candidates. In the first round, aptitude and motivation are assessed on the basis of criteria such as A-level grades, previous vocational training or work experience and voluntary work. The second stage consists of a selection interview.

Saxony wants to expand its measures to secure medical care in rural areas with the "rural dentist quota". The aim is to attract more dentists and orthodontists to provide contract dental care in rural areas. From the winter semester 2026/2027, 8.1 percent of places in dentistry will be allocated via this preliminary quota.
