One in six people in Saxony cannot afford even one week's vacation a year. This is according to an analysis by the Federal Statistical Office. Last year, 16.4 percent of Saxons lived in a household that said they could not afford a week's vacation. In 2023, the proportion was slightly higher at 18.4 percent.
In a comparison of the federal states, however, Saxony is in a better position than others. Last year, 34.2 percent of households in Bremen were unable to afford a week's vacation, 28.8 percent in Saarland and 25.7 percent in Lower Saxony. Bavaria was at the other end of the scale with 14.2 percent. The national average is 21 percent.
Homes of single parents particularly affected
People living in households with a single adult are particularly often affected. Here, the figure reported by the Federal Office for Saxony was 31.7 percent. However, the statisticians pointed out that this figure should be viewed with caution. It is of limited informative value because it is statistically relatively uncertain. The reason for this is the size of the sample.
Reliable state-specific figures for single parents are only available for the six most populous states, as the samples for the smaller ones are too small. In Rhineland-Palatinate, 55.7 percent of single-parent households cannot afford to take a week's vacation per year. In Lower Saxony, the figure is 46.5 percent and in North Rhine-Westphalia 42.8 percent
