Florian Oest, a CDU member of the Bundestag from Saxony, believes his party remains in a difficult position even after the resignation of Bundestag parliamentary group leader Jens Spahn. “A new parliamentary group leader alone won’t be enough,” he said on Saturday. “The approval ratings for the Union are disastrous.”
He entered politics “to shape and improve the lives of the people in our country,” Oest said. He, too, is frustrated by the policy of small steps. “A lot of things need to be put to the test,” he continued.
Oest called for a special meeting of the Bundestag parliamentary group and a conference of district chairpersons. “In the current situation, the Bundestag parliamentary group must meet quickly now and clarify matters.” He considered Spahn’s resignation inevitable. However, he said, we shouldn’t now pretend that “everything is fine again in the Union” just because we’re getting a new parliamentary group leader: “That’s simply not the case,” the politician emphasized.
