When it comes to the Abitur, girls are ahead in Saxony. Why is that?

More girls than boys attend grammar school in Saxony - even though there are fewer girls than boys under the age of 18 in the Free State. This was announced by the State Statistical Office in Kamenz on the occasion of the United Nations World Girls' Day on October 11.

In the past five years, 52.5 percent of pupils at grammar schools have been female. The proportion of girls leaving school with a high school diploma was also higher. On average over the past five years, 15,347 female pupils and 16,051 male pupils left one of the schools in the Free State. 35.7 percent of the girls had an Abitur in their pockets. The figure for boys was only 28.4 percent of school leavers.

According to the statistics office, there are fewer girls than boys in the under-18 age group. Between 2019 and 2023, the ratio was 48.6 to 51.4 percent. On average, there were 95 girls of the same age for every 100 boys. The situation was similar for births between 2019 and 2023: Here, the proportion of girls was 48.7 percent.
