Leipzig's population has risen more sharply in the past two years than recently forecast. This is according to the latest evaluation of the population forecast, as announced by the city. At the end of 2024, 632,562 people were living in the trade fair city as their main residence, around 7,900 more than at the end of 2022. The forecast had expected around 629,300 inhabitants in 2024. This means that Leipzig will remain the largest city in Saxony, ahead of Dresden (around 574,000 inhabitants).
The main reason given for the increase was higher immigration, particularly from abroad. The birth rate fell more sharply than forecast. In 2024, a woman in the trade fair city had an average of just 0.97 children. In 2017, this birth rate was still 1.45 children per woman.
