Minister of State for Culture Weimer sees Chemnitz as a creative city open to the world. What the European Capital of Culture 2025 makes visible for the region and Europe.

Chemnitz has so far successfully seized its opportunity as European Capital of Culture 2025, according to Minister of State for Culture Wolfram Weimer. Guests from all over the world are discovering a city that has long been underestimated and is now becoming visible as a cosmopolitan creative city in the heart of Europe, explained Weimer during his visit to this year's European Capital of Culture. With the commitment of more than a thousand volunteers, the Saxon city proves that culture builds bridges - between generations, regions and nations.

"The European Capital of Culture makes visible what we all have in Europe and the European Union: Diversity, freedom, creativity," said Weimer, who, among other things, organized the exhibition "Edvard Munch. Angst" exhibition at the Chemnitz Art Collections and the NSU Documentation Center. A panel discussion with the actor and former general director of the Weimar Theatre, Hasko Weber, on "Culture and identity - contradiction or unity?" is also on the agenda for the evening.

Chemnitz is the European Capital of Culture 2025 alongside the Slovenian-Italian twin city of Nova Gorica/Gorizia. The federal government is supporting the program with 25 million euros. Further funds will reportedly go towards the documentation center on the NSU complex and, via the German Federal Cultural Foundation, the "enter - Young Cultural Region Chemnitz" project.

The Saxon industrial city and 38 partner municipalities will be hosting a multifaceted art and cultural programme until the end of the year. Around 30 venues have been created throughout Chemnitz, which will continue to be used beyond the Capital of Culture year.
