Several hundred people in Dresden drew attention to the situation in Iran with a solidarity demonstration under the motto "All Eyes on Iran". The Center for Intercultural Understanding Dresden (ZIVD) had called for the demonstration. As the police reported on request, the rally went off without a hitch.
Demands to Berlin and criticism of Tehran
The demonstration began in the early afternoon at the "Goldener Reiter" and led as a procession into the city center to the Frauenkirche. Dresden SPD member of parliament Rasha Nasr wrote on Instagram that more than 350 people took part in the protest. The Dresden police department does not usually comment on the number of participants in demonstrations.
According to the organizer, Nasr and the Green Party member of parliament Kassem Taher Saleh spoke at the rally. The Iranian regime was criticized in speeches for its ongoing repression and executions. In addition, demands were made of the German government - including more protection for Iranians in exile and more consistent action against suspected influence and espionage structures.
Thousands of demonstrators protested against the Islamic regime in Iran in several German cities at the weekend and called for a change.
Shattering figures from Iran
A dramatic economic crisis and very high inflation triggered protests in Iran at the end of December calling for the end of the Islamic Republic. The security apparatus reacted with brutal severity.
According to the newspaper "The Sunday Times", 16,500 to 18,000 people have been killed in the mass protests so far. Employees in 8 large eye clinics and 16 emergency rooms in the country have compiled the figures. Hundreds of thousands more people are said to have been injured.
Iran's supreme leader Ali Khamenei admitted for the first time on Saturday that there had been thousands of deaths during the protests.
