Six municipalities receive funding for parks, schools, and daycare centers

Six more municipalities in Saxony are receiving funding to revitalize their town centers and neighborhoods. Boxberg, Meerane, Meißen, Neukieritzsch, Penig, and Wurzen will collectively receive approximately 23.6 million euros in the 2026 program year, according to the Ministry of Infrastructure.

From the historic brewery to the market square

Among other things, the funds will be used to redesign market squares and parks, as well as to renovate schools, daycare centers, residential buildings, and recreational facilities. In Penig, for example, the historic brewery—which has stood vacant since 2013—is to be developed into a versatile venue. In the Deutzen district of Neukieritzsch, plans include the renovation of the market square, the community center, and the church.

In Meerane, funding will go toward, among other things, Wettiner Platz, a former sailcloth factory, and two daycare centers. Wurzen plans to renovate the city park, a youth center, and an elementary school. In Boxberg, a new town center is to be created, while in Meissen, work is planned on the park at the Elblandklinikum and at the Wellenspiel recreational pool.

Nearly 96 million euros for 51 municipalities

This year, a total of 51 Saxon cities and municipalities will receive approximately 95.9 million euros from the Program for Growth and Sustainable Renewal. The Saxon Reconstruction Bank is expected to send them their grant notifications in the coming days. The program is primarily aimed at communities with vacant properties, a need for renovation, and economic and demographic challenges. The urban development funding is jointly financed by the federal government, the states, and the municipalities.
