Saxony's FDP is kicking off the election year with several events for its traditional Epiphany meeting. An edition of the meeting is already planned in Bautzen on Sunday, followed by Döbeln on Monday and Aue-Bad Schlema on January 13, the Liberals announced on Saturday. "The Free Democrats are facing tough elections, which will once again have to be conducted in a difficult political environment. It is not only the current negative results of the unpopular traffic light system in the federal government that will be felt in the election campaign," it said. The "hardly less popular Saxon coalition of the CDU with the SPD and Greens" will also dominate discussions in the coming months.
The FDP's aim in the local and European elections on 9 June is to defend the results of the last elections and consolidate its local base, the party announced. In the 2019 European elections, the Liberals received 4.7 percent of the vote in Bavaria, compared to 4.6 percent in the local elections. "In the state election, the aim of the FDP Saxony is to enter the state parliament with a strong team and replace the Greens in the government." In the polls, however, the Liberals are far from achieving this. In the two most recent surveys, they only achieved two and one percent respectively. In September 2023, it was five percent.
