Saxony's SPD is hosting an extraordinary party convention in the state capital. The main topics will be education and the new party platform. The Young Socialists are pushing for action on the police bill.

The Saxon SPD is convening today (starting at 10:00 a.m.) in Dresden for an extraordinary party convention. Its primary focus will be on education policy and reforms. For party leader Henning Homann, these are important issues for the future. His party has set itself the goal of making schools in the Free State future-proof, he said. Schools in rural areas are to be preserved.

SPD Wants to Bring an East German Perspective to the Policy Debate

A second focus is the SPD’s policy platform, which is to be adopted at a federal party convention in Leipzig at the end of 2027. The Saxon Social Democrats want to bring the East German perspective to this discussion.

Federal Environment Minister Schneider to attend

Federal Environment Minister Carsten Schneider (SPD) is also expected at the current state party convention at the Penck Hotel in Dresden. In addition to Homann, his co-chair Kathrin Michel and Saxony’s Minister of Economic Affairs Dirk Panter will address the delegates. The SPD in Saxony currently has 4,400 members.

Young Socialists Apply Pressure Over New Police Law

Meanwhile, the Saxon Young Socialists are putting pressure on their party regarding the new police law. In a motion to the party convention, they are calling on the state parliamentary group not to approve the bill in its current form and to work toward fundamental changes. They are particularly critical of the police’s new surveillance powers.
