On the occasion of Europe Day on Friday (9 May), Saxony's Minister of Economic Affairs Dirk Panter (SPD) emphasizes the economic importance of the EU for the Free State of Saxony. "The European Union is the foundation of our economic success. EU funding enables innovations and investments that drive Saxony's development," explained Panter. Free trade in Europe secures jobs and opens up new markets for Saxon companies.
More than 14 billion euros in EU funding for Saxony
According to the Ministry of Economic Affairs, Saxony will receive around 1.95 billion euros from the European Regional Development Fund, almost 590 million euros from the European Social Fund Plus (ESF Plus) and 645 million euros from the Just Transition Fund in the funding period that runs until 2027. Since 1990, Saxony has received more than 14 billion euros in EU funding and 230,000 projects have been realized with EU funding.
EU internal market is Saxony's most important sales market
Saxony also benefits from the EU internal market and open borders when it comes to exports. According to the Ministry of Economic Affairs, exports account for around 40 percent of Saxony's economic output, with its EU partners being key sales markets. In 2024, products worth 23 billion euros were exported to EU countries. This means that the EU single market remains the number one trading partner, it said.
The European Union's Europe Day is celebrated every year on May 9. It commemorates the Schuman Declaration of 1950, in which French Foreign Minister Robert Schuman proposed the idea of European cooperation. Europe Day was introduced in 1985.
