The Spreehotel in Bautzen, which is used as refugee accommodation, will be closed at the end of February. The contracts between the district and the operator will then end, as the district administration office announced. According to the information, around 150 people of different nationalities are currently still living in the facility. They will be distributed to other shared accommodation in the district.
The Spreehotel has been providing asylum accommodation since 2014. The conversion of the hotel led to protests in the region. There had also been several arson attacks on the building. According to the district, the accommodation was closed in 2017 due to falling numbers of asylum seekers. In 2022, the district rented the Spreehotel again as accommodation for refugees, as asylum numbers were rising again at the time.
