The documentation center on the NSU crimes in Chemnitz has counted more than 13,000 visitors since its opening in May and will remain open beyond the Capital of Culture year. A new supporting structure is being created for this purpose. The Free State has provided money for the project in the current double budget in order to secure funding for 2026, the institution's sponsors announced.
"The Documentation Center is an important place of learning and encounter that promotes responsibility and dialogue," said Alexander Dierks (CDU), President of the State Parliament, in a statement. It does important work that radiates beyond the city of Chemnitz. "Its continuation and professionalization is a gain for Chemnitz, Saxony and the development of a new perspective on remembrance, reappraisal and our society today."
New sponsoring company to take over at the turn of the year
At the turn of the year, a new non-profit limited liability company is to become the sponsor of the institution, whose shareholders are the previous associations of the consortium. "With the spin-off, we are ensuring continuity in political education on the NSU complex," said Nora Krzywinski, one of the three previous directors of the center. The project is supported by the organizations ASA-FF, RAA Saxony and the Initiative Offene Gesellschaft.
Saxony was once the retreat of the far-right terrorist cell "National Socialist Underground" (NSU). The core trio from Thuringia lived here undisturbed for years, had numerous supporters and organized their series of murders of at least ten people - the victims were eight small business owners of Turkish origin, one of Greek origin and a policewoman. The trio is also responsible for a number of robberies and bomb attacks.
Legal investigation into the NSU continues
Another NSU trial has recently begun: The Dresden Higher Regional Court is hearing the case against an alleged confidante of terrorist Beate Zschäpe, who is accused of supporting a terrorist organization, among other things.
The new organizational form is intended as an intermediate step towards a foundation, it was said. Experts from the previous team are to continue the content-related work. The center sees itself as a place of remembrance and education. This includes an exhibition, an archive and regular events. The aim is to keep the memory of the victims alive and to promote the reappraisal of right-wing terror and the failures of the security authorities.
