Luisa Neubauer accuses Chancellor Friedrich Merz of missing the point in the debate on security. What bothers the climate activist about the chancellor's stance.

Climate activist Luisa Neubauer has accused Federal Chancellor Friedrich Merz (CDU) of having the wrong focus in the "cityscape" debate. The problem is not migration, Neubauer told the "Freie Presse" newspaper. "The problem is men. It is important that we have this debate." It is tiring to be governed by a chancellor "who regularly offends entire population groups in passing".

Merz had triggered the so-called "cityscape" debate with a statement on the federal government's migration policy: "Of course, we still have this problem in the cityscape, and that is why the Federal Minister of the Interior is now also in the process of enabling and carrying out repatriations on a very large scale." He later became more specific: Those migrants who do not have permanent residence status, who do not work and who also do not abide by the rules that apply in Germany are causing problems, he said.

Neubauer: Would rather look for solutions to climate crisis with Merz

Neubauer now emphasized: "Women in Germany are not safe, that is clear. However, the common denominator here is not "cityscape", but simply "men". Nothing we have heard from the Chancellor in the last week gives the serious impression that he is really concerned about the safety of us women."

The activist also criticized the German government's climate policy. The Union's course is "a fundamental rejection of an intact environment", said Neubauer. "I would much rather look for solutions to the climate crisis together with Friedrich Merz than take to the streets against him. But in view of the situation, only the latter remains."
