Saxony's Minister President Michael Kretschmer (CDU) warns his party against further coalitions with the Greens. "Our goal must be to form a government without the Greens," Kretschmer told Welt am Sonntag. This applies to both Saxony and the federal government. "The CDU must be open about this, we must be very clear." In Saxony, the CDU governs together with the Greens and the SPD. Kretschmer accused the federal government of Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD) of being on the wrong track and being driven by the Greens.
In contrast, CDU federal chairman Friedrich Merz had commented on the possibility of a black-green coalition at federal level at the beginning of the year. He named the SPD and the Greens as possible partners in the event that a coalition with the FDP was not enough. "Not a particularly tempting prospect, but there must be a majority capable of governing," he wrote in an email to his supporters in February.
