Saxony's Minister President Michael Kretschmer has paid tribute to Federal Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD) for his service. "You will go down in history as a guy with rough edges," said Kretschmer (CDU) at the meeting of state premiers in Berlin.
Scholz's word had always been true, Kretschmer emphasized. "We loved the 'yes' more than the 'no'. The "no" also came up often, but this country has a lot to thank you for."
Scholz and the minister presidents had signed an agreement on the financing of the cultural institution of the Prussian Cultural Heritage Foundation. The heads of government of the federal states also discussed the political situation after the Bundestag elections, among other things.
In the Bundestag elections in February, the SPD achieved a historically poor result with top candidate Scholz with 16.4 percent. The CDU achieved 28.5 percent. This means that CDU leader Friedrich Merz has the best chance of becoming the next chancellor. Scholz will remain in office for the time being.
