In Halle (Saale), around 186,000 people are being called upon to elect a new Lord Mayor. According to the city administration, nine candidates are running in the election for the city's highest office.
This should also end years of uncertainty. In April 2021, Egbert Geier (SPD) took office as the legal representative after the elected Lord Mayor Bernd Wiegand (non-party) was suspended in the wake of a coronavirus vaccination scandal. A possible run-off election would take place on February 23 parallel to the federal election.
