Grimma's mayor Berger had long considered whether he should accept his seat in the state parliament. Now a decision has apparently been made.

According to a report in the "Leipziger Volkszeitung" newspaper, Grimma's mayor Matthias Berger wants to move to the state parliament. The Free Voters politician has decided to accept his direct mandate, the newspaper writes, citing its own information. He had previously left this open. When asked, Berger did not want to comment on this at first, but referred to a press conference in Grimma this morning.

Berger won the direct mandate in the Leipzig Land 3 constituency with 36.6 percent of the vote and clearly outperformed AfD candidate Jörg Dornau (30.7 percent), among others.

Berger has been mayor of Grimma since 2008 and is very popular. According to Berger, the goal of the Free Voters is conservative, middle-class politics. The Free Voters missed out on a place in the state parliament in the election with 2.3 percent. Only Berger would have a seat through the direct mandate.
