According to a new forecast, the city of Dresden is expecting moderate population growth over the next 15 years. An increase of around 16,400 inhabitants is expected by mid-2040, according to the Saxon state capital. That is an increase of 2.9 percent to around 587,900 people.
Due to expected company expansions and planned new settlements in the north of Dresden, an influx of skilled workers is expected, it said. However, the persistently low birth rate prevents a stronger growth dynamic, as assumed in the population forecast from 2023.
Very different developments are predicted for the individual age groups up to 2040. According to the forecast, the overall number of children will initially continue to decrease. In contrast, the number of senior citizens will grow moderately. According to the data, the average age of Dresden's population will rise slightly from the current 43.7 to 44.8 years in 2040.
The data source for the population forecast by the state capital's municipal statistics office is Dresden's population register as at June 30 last year, according to which around 571,500 people lived in the city.
