Anyone moving house in Saxony will soon no longer have to go to the residents' registration office. In future, citizens will be able to register their new place of residence conveniently from home via the Internet using the "electronic residence registration" (eWA), as announced by the Ministry of the Interior. The address on the ID card will then be updated automatically via smartphone. The new address sticker for the ID document and the residence sticker for the passport will be sent by post.
The system has already been tested in a pilot project in Dresden, Grimma, Leipzig and Meißen. The service will now be made available throughout Saxony, it added. The Saxon State Chancellery is funding the connection costs of around 43,000 euros for the first 20 Saxon municipalities in 2025. Funds amounting to around 578,000 euros are available in the 2025/26 double budget for connecting further municipalities.
