The town of Werdau (Zwickau district) has caused a nationwide smile with a sweet souvenir to snack on. The pink-colored foam sugar treat is supposed to depict the historic advertising clock, the town's landmark. However, the color and shape give viewers a completely different, more sexual idea. Because the sweet is reminiscent of a penis. This has already prompted the satirical magazine "Extra 3": "Real madness: city marketing goes down the drain", it says.
However, Mayor Sören Kristensen is in good spirits and is delighted with the great response. The whole thing was his idea and he paid for the first batch himself, he says. The advertising clock is the city's landmark and adorns illustrated books as well as key rings. "It's always been on everyone's lips here." That's where the idea of offering the landmark as a snack came from.
"We are overwhelmed by orders"
According to Kristensen, 1,000 of them were initially produced in a factory as promotional gifts - in raspberry flavor. But when the bags arrived at the town hall, his employees started laughing and had "completely different interpretations" of the shape of the treat, says the city boss.
In the meantime, the sweet has been well received far beyond the city. That's why they have been reordered, now also in white. "We are overwhelmed by orders."
He hadn't expected so many reactions, says the Lord Mayor. Many people had only heard about Werdau as a result. "Some comments on social media say: I didn't even know Werdau, now I have to go there. Then you have to say: not intended, but goal achieved."
