Following the AfD party convention in Erfurt, AfD leader Tino Chrupalla spoke out against abolishing the dual leadership structure in his party. During the presentation of his autobiography *Handwerk – Meister – Politik* in Berlin, the politician from Saxony highlighted the successes of recent years under his leadership alongside Alice Weidel.
Is the cow doing too well, so she wants to go ice skating?
“Why should we question this successful model?” he said. “I get the impression that the cow is doing too well—now she wants to go ice skating.” The AfD has more than doubled its election results over the past four years. The election results at the party convention—Weidel emerged stronger, while Chrupalla suffered a setback—were interpreted as a sign pointing toward a possible single-leader structure.
While Chrupalla acknowledged that it was a valid question and expressed the expectation that there could be a new discussion—and even a decision—on the matter in the coming years, he also voiced his skepticism: “If the party says we want a single leader now, then it’s only fair to ask: Will we be even more successful? Will we then reach 40 percent at the federal level?”
