Fewer authorities, faster decisions: Saxony's government wants to radically restructure its administrative apparatus. The aim is to reduce staff and costs while increasing efficiency.

Saxony's state government wants to streamline authorities in the state and make them more efficient with a modernization package. Specifically, "interfaces" are to be eliminated, tasks bundled and authorities merged in order to manage with fewer personnel and financial resources and work more efficiently, said Minister President Michael Kretschmer (CDU) at the cabinet press conference in Dresden. "We need to change processes, we need to reduce tasks, we need to do things more intelligently," said the head of government. The package is also a response to the expected population decline in the state.

In concrete terms, the measures envisage the merging of several state authorities - for example in the areas of road construction and transport, archaeology and monument protection and economic development. The state directorate is to be given more powers as a central enforcement authority. Administrative procedures are to be simplified and inspection requirements reduced. "This is also a question of trust, but it is also a question of personnel resources, which we will save if we have fewer objection procedures," said Kretschmer.

The cabinet had been meeting since Sunday to discuss the 2027/2028 double budget, administrative modernization and easing the burden on local authorities and the economy. The aim now is to enter into discussions with the individual houses and administrations as part of so-called chief talks, said Social Affairs Minister Petra Köpping (SPD). "To be honest, this is the most ambitious project that the Free State has tackled since 1990."
