BSW Leadership on Saxony-Anhalt: Decide Based on the Issues

During the ongoing process of forming a government in Saxony-Anhalt, the BSW national leadership has once again spoken out in favor of cooperating with all parties in the newly elected state parliament. “We will base our decisions on substance. We will strive to secure majorities for our proposals and our political platform. And we do not distinguish based on party affiliation when deciding who to work with,” said Federal Chair Amira Mohamed Ali at the party convention of the Saxon BSW state chapter in Leipzig.

The infighting and social division must come to an end. Mohamed Ali criticizes the fact that politics and the media are fixated solely on their stance toward the AfD. “Overall, we have a political debate that revolves exclusively around this one question: Where do you stand on the AfD? Which side of the firewall are you on?” Against this backdrop, the rise of the AfD should come as no surprise.

Ruhnert on the AfD: “Anyone who doesn’t want that is in the wrong place at the BSW”

In Saxony-Anhalt, the BSW will do exactly what the party promised in the run-up to the election. That should come as no surprise. Mohamed Ali once again rejected the idea of a coalition with the AfD faction in Magdeburg.

People in Saxony-Anhalt voted for a change in policy, said Federal Secretary-General Oliver Ruhnert to the delegates in Leipzig. If there are areas of common ground with the parties in the Magdeburg state parliament, “we should agree,” Ruhnert said. This also applies to the AfD. “If we have common ground with the AfD because it makes sense for the people, then we will do so. Anyone who doesn’t want that is in the wrong party.”

The BSW’s Key Role in Saxony-Anhalt

The AfD emerged as the clear winner in the state election in Saxony-Anhalt and holds 39 seats in the Magdeburg state parliament. The BSW entered the legislature with five seats. Neither the AfD nor the CDU, SPD, and Greens can secure a majority without the BSW. This gives the party a key role in the ongoing formation of a government in Saxony-Anhalt.
