They play in ankle-deep mud instead of on manicured grass: Ten teams competed for the German championship title in mud soccer in North Saxony. Eight men's and two women's teams competed, as organizer Stephan Guth said. In view of the mud on the pitch, the games were a challenge in terms of fitness.
Cult tournament in its 15th edition
The cult tournament was reportedly held for the 15th time in the Doberschütz district of Wöllnau. A great deal of effort is put into preparing the pitch each time. The area is transformed into a sea of mud and puddles with around 200,000 liters of well water.
"It's a fun sport," emphasized Guth. The title was won by the local heroes from the Lokomotive Wöllnau club. They have now reportedly qualified for the Mud Football World Cup in Finland.
