Hiking in the footsteps of an Olympic champion - this will be possible in the Ore Mountains in the future. The tourism association presented the "Eric Frenzel Trails": 18 planned circular hiking trails in the region between Eibenstock, Oberwiesenthal and Amtsberg. They are intended to be suitable for hiking, Nordic walking and trail running - sports that Eric Frenzel, the trail's namesake, enjoys doing in his free time.
Frenzel, a former Nordic combined athlete and current national coach, helped design the trails. They are between 10 and 22 kilometers long and can reportedly be completed in half a day or a whole day.
In total, the trail network will cover 290 kilometers. A feasibility study has been submitted for this purpose. It remains to be seen when the concept will be implemented.
Partner project in the Upper Palatinate
Frenzel comes from the Ore Mountains. He won three Olympic gold medals and numerous world championship titles as an athlete.
There is a partner project to the project in the Erzgebirge in the Upper Palatinate. The "Eric Frenzel Trails/Oberpfälzer Wald" are to be created there - 19 trails with a total length of around 230 kilometers. The two projects are intended to reinforce each other.
