The Saxon government is developing a strategy to adapt the state to the consequences of climate change. The aim is to take precautions instead of having to repair damage later, announced Economics Minister Dirk Panter (SPD). The cabinet has passed a decision in principle to draw up the strategy. A catalog of measures should be available by the end of next year.
Climate risk analyses are to be drawn up for 16 areas such as agriculture, civil protection, urban development, forestry, water and tourism. Based on this, measures will be derived that the Free State and its authorities can take. A "Climate Adaptation Day for Saxon districts and municipalities" is planned to kick things off on October 28.
According to the Climate Adaptation Act, all federal states are obliged to draw up a precautionary strategy including a list of measures by January 2027 at the latest. The municipalities are also required to develop corresponding concepts.
According to the ministry, Saxony is increasingly affected by climate change. In addition to warming, this is particularly noticeable due to longer dry spells alternating with more frequent heavy rainfall.
