Storks are his passion: a bus driver in the district of Leipzig has been looking after storks for decades. He is currently putting young animals on a diet.

A bus driver from Borna has been looking after injured and orphaned storks for around 40 years. He has nursed more than 100 animals over the past decades, said stork father Jörg Spörl. "Everyone has their own bird. Mine is just a bit bigger," emphasized the 62-year-old. He is also the stork representative for the Geithain region in the district of Leipzig and also drives buses in Altenburg in Thuringia.

He is currently preparing around half a dozen young birds for release into the wild and their flight south. According to him, young white storks need around 500-700 grams of food per day. The food consists of mice and chicks, which Spörl gets from a nearby eco-station. "Now, just before they are released into the wild, I reduce the food and wean them a little. Otherwise there is no incentive for the animals to forage for themselves."
