A place of their own instead of “living with Mom”: In Saxony, students are most likely to move into a private rental apartment. Living with their parents is generally unpopular.

Living in one’s own apartment remains the most popular housing option for students in Saxony. This is according to a survey by the Center for Higher Education Development (CHE). According to the survey, 31.2 percent of students in Saxony live in a privately rented apartment. That was slightly less than in 2023 (33.3 percent). Shared apartments follow in second place (25.5 percent).

Students in Saxony are particularly likely to live in dormitories, accounting for 22.6 percent of the total. In a comparison of German states, Saxony ranks second behind Brandenburg (25.1 percent). Nationwide, the figure is only 15.2 percent. Just over one in six students in Saxony lives with their parents (17.6 percent). This makes “Living at Mom’s” significantly less popular than the German average (27.9 percent).

Half of Students Use Public Transportation to Get to University

When it comes to getting to campus, there’s a clear favorite: More than half of students regularly use public transit (54.9 percent). Many also walk (42.1 percent). Just under one in three regularly rides a bicycle, and just under one in four drives a car or rides a motorcycle.

For the “CHE University Ranking,” approximately 87,200 undergraduate students were surveyed over the past three winter semesters (2023/24 through 2025/26) about their living situations and mobility.

Significant Regional Differences

According to the analysis, housing and living situations vary greatly depending on the university’s location: In Saarland—the top-ranked federal state—42.8 percent continue to live with their parents while studying. Thuringia has the highest proportion of students living in shared apartments among the federal states, at 33.2 percent. Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania has the highest proportion of students living in rented apartments, at 46.7 percent.
