In Saxony, the police detected fewer traffic violations at the start of the school year in August than in the previous year. With over 2,800 violations detected, the number fell by around 700, according to the Ministry of the Interior.
The majority of those checked were speeding: Officers detected 1,805 speeding offenses. A total of 1,509 warnings were issued and 296 of the speeding offenders were fined. In 135 cases, the officers also registered inadequate child restraints in the car.
As part of the state-wide road safety campaign for the start of school, the Saxony police set up a total of 1,358 checkpoints at elementary school, daycare centers and on school routes. The aim of the campaign was to sensitize drivers to pay more attention to children on the roads at the start of the new school year. The campaign has been running for 20 years.
