Saxony is recruiting students from Chile. To this end, an academic liaison office has now been opened in the Chilean capital Santiago de Chile. With its help, young people from the South American country are to be recruited to study or pursue further academic programs at one of the universities in the Free State. There are already other offices of this kind in Taiwan, Uzbekistan, Vietnam, Mongolia and India.
Office also aims to promote scientific exchange
In addition to the targeted acquisition of students and therefore potential employees for Saxony, the office's remit also includes scientific exchange between research institutions and universities between Saxony and Chile. It operates under the name Saxon Sience Liasion Office.
"The potential of young people in Chile who can easily apply to study in Saxony is very promising. One reason for this is the low language barriers, as many young people are learning German," explained Science Minister Sebastian Gemkow (CDU). It is also expected to have an impact in other South American countries.
A good 50 collaborations between universities in both countries
According to the Saxon Ministry of Science, there are currently a good 50 collaborations between Saxon and Chilean universities. Non-university research institutions are also cooperating with Chilean partners, particularly in the fields of resource extraction, astronomical sciences, climate research, medicine and the humanities. Around 80 Chileans are currently studying at universities in Saxony.
Susanne Fries-Gaier, Germany's ambassador to Chile, praised the good cooperation between the two countries in the fields of science, technology and education. "With the 'Saxon Sience Liasion Office', we are gaining another actor to intensify this exchange of knowledge in order to inspire even more Chileans for Germany and Saxony as a place to train and study in the future."
