The city council has recalculated the required capacities of kindergartens and crèches. Fewer children are now resulting in a gradual reduction in childcare places.

The city of Chemnitz wants to cut around 1,000 childcare places in crèches and kindergartens. According to the city council, this has been decided in the new daycare needs plan. According to the plan, the number of places in crèches is to be reduced by around 330 by 2027/2028. Around 700 places are to be cut in nurseries.

The city cites the low birth rate and a change in the use of childcare services as the main reasons for the reduction. The adjusted daycare needs plan will now be discussed with the providers of the facilities in a next step. Mergers of facilities are also on the agenda.
