Up to 60 first-year students will be able to start the new course from next October. The region is set to benefit in particular.

A new degree course for secondary school teaching will be offered at Chemnitz University of Technology from the coming winter semester. The Ministry of Science announced that 60 study places will be created in October 2026. The government is providing 500,000 euros for this.

The course comprises seven school subjects, including mathematics, technology and home economics/social studies. The future students are to complete internships and practical school studies in the regions of Chemnitz, Central and Western Saxony where possible.

Clemens: "Good news for pupils"

An agreement to this effect was signed by Science Minister Sebastian Gemkow, Culture Minister Conrad Clemens (both CDU) and the Rector of Chemnitz University of Technology, Gerd Strohmeier, in the morning. Afterwards, Clemens spoke of good news for students in south-west Saxony. "In view of the current pupil number forecast, it will be even more important in future to recruit teachers for school types such as secondary schools and rural regions," he said according to the press release.

Pupil numbers in Saxony falling

In the 2040/2041 school year, up to 20 percent fewer children and young people will be attending school in Saxony than today, according to a forecast by the State Statistical Office. Instead of around 419,250, there will then only be 337,450 to 367,500 pupils, according to calculations published last week. The target agreements with the universities regarding the number of teacher training places are to be adjusted in line with the forecast.
