Saxony's universities are facing warning strikes. The Education and Science Union (GEW) has announced work stoppages and actions in Leipzig, Dresden and Chemnitz on Wednesday (January 28). The background to this is the wage dispute in the public sector of the federal states.
According to GEW, there is a need for action at universities. "Low-paid employees and part-time academic staff have been particularly hard hit by inflation in recent years and are in need of pay rises," said GEW Vice President David Jugel. A collective agreement for student employees is also required. "Hidden underpayment through part-time contracts with full-time work must also no longer be a practice."
Actions are planned nationwide
A warning strike has been called for employees at universities, public universities, student unions, the Saxon Academy of Sciences and Academic Libraries in Saxony. Student and research assistants are also being called out.
Work stoppages and rallies are planned at universities across Germany on Wednesday. The union is calling it a nationwide university action day.
