The sighting of an unknown flying object near Schöneck in Vogtland has triggered a large-scale operation by the police and fire department. According to the police, the first report was received on Sunday afternoon, followed by further calls from several people independently of each other. The "Freie Presse" had previously reported.
Together with the fire department, the police searched the area extensively. A helicopter with a thermal imaging camera, a drone and a dog squadron were used in the search, according to a police spokesperson. The officers also coordinated with colleagues from the neighboring Czech Republic and Upper Franconia in Bavaria.
Object remains unknown
The police also received a video of a sighting, which they currently believe to be genuine. However, nothing was found. According to the police, there were also no reports of injured or missing persons or damage to property. Inquiries to other authorities such as the space agency, Leipzig Airport, the German Armed Forces or the German Weather Service have also remained unsuccessful for the time being.
The police are currently investigating what the flying object could be. The possibility of an "astronomical object" from outer space is also being investigated, the spokesperson added. However, no further search measures are currently being carried out. The police are still coordinating with the other authorities on how to proceed.
