Economy Minister Martin Dulig (SPD) hopes the billion-euro investment by chip company TSMC in Dresden will attract more imitators. "This will mean a pull effect for further new settlements and the influx of highly qualified specialists," he said after visiting TSMC's headquarters in Hsinchu, Taiwan, according to a statement. He said he had discussed details of the settlement with the company's Dresden-based project team. These include, for example, the issuance of visas for Taiwanese professionals and the possible expansion of the international school.
"Silicon Saxony is now one of the five most important semiconductor regions in the world," Dulig stated. Semiconductors are among the key technologies of the future, he said. "They are the oil of the 21st century." The new plant in Dresden would shorten supply chains for domestic industry. TSMC had announced in August that it intended to build a semiconductor plant in Dresden. The investment sum is around ten billion euros. The plant is to be built jointly with Bosch, Infineon and NXP. The main focus will be on the production of chips for the automotive industry.
